For some months now we have been collecting donations in kind for homeless people in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area together with the @gutenachtbus project. We collect clothes and shoes as well as the donations in kind listed below in the donation box you can find at our AFEW STORE, Oststrasse 36, 40211 Düsseldorf.
We took you one night with the gutenachtbus. To have a look behind the scenes, show the background and capture some voices. You can find the short documentary on our Instagram channel @afewstore. At the same time, we want to show you what you can do if you want to help.
gutenachtbus
The gutenachtbus is an initiative of vision:teilen e.V. that exists since 2011 and helps to care for homeless and needy people in Düsseldorf. Together with the support of fiftyfifty, a non-profit charity organization that assists homeless people with many different projects, the night help was established.
The teams consist of volunteers. A shift begins with the volunteers meeting in the evening. They picking up the bus, loading it with food and material donations, and then driving off. The bus drives to the old town and the main train station every evening from Monday to Thursday. Here, the helpers distribute food, hygiene items, clothing, and equipment for the night. People can then drop by and get what the bus has loaded.
The gutenachtbus is especially important during the cold season. “The gutenachtbus is important so that no one freezes on the street.”. Warm food and drinks can go a long way, but so can human contact. “People need normality the most and to see that they are accepted as they are, that they are helped. It’s super important to be friendly with people and help them in their time of need.”
The bus serves not only as a mobile dining and consulting room but also as a means of transporting people in emergencies. Thus, the gutenachtbus forms the counterpart to the facilities that take care of the homeless and needy people during the day. At temperatures below 0°C, the team around the gutenachtbus is also active in outreach.
