Developed as a running shoe, the Air Kukini from Nike made its debut back in 2000. Inspired by the winter sportswear brand Spyder, the Air Kukini got its classic look that has lasted until today. At the time, Spyder outfitted Picabo Street, the famous ski racer who served as the inspiration for the Air Kukini. Functionality meets casual and style here.
The upper is made of a neoprene-like stretch material that is encompassed by a futuristic TPU cage. A transparent cage gives the topographical pattern on the upper a sporty yet casual look that fits perfectly into the Y2K style. The “Mystic Navy” colorway upper is accented by the translucent cage and white overlays on the heel and the toe box. The midsole is also done in white.
Classic for an Air model from Nike, the Air Kukini also features an exposed Air unit. This is bordered by the psychedelic pattern in “Mystic Navy” that is also found on the upper. Originally designed for performance sports, the visible cushioning also brings a sporty aspect. So does the upper as a woven support system that supports the foot. All of this makes the Air Kukini a comfortable shoe that is also suitable for everyday wear while still maintaining its outdoor vibe.
